Vintage Thingie Thursday junk vrs memories

It's Thursday again so that means it Vintage thingies Thurs. over at ColoradaLady's I love VTT
This week I am showing a collection of different style items to show just how much JUNK I have around, but it's my junk and it has special memories.
The first item I have to show has got to be the ugliest item in the world, but my Momma treasured it and it was on display in every house we lived in along with several other items from me and my Sister's Vacation Bible school days. Unfortunately, All of the other items has been lost over the years. My Sister just happen to find this in a box Mom had stored at her house a couple of years before she passed. I have it in a small cabinet in my living room...It is not much to look at, but I made it and even painted it myself when I was 3 years old...can't you tell, I guess the teacher wrote my name on the bottom before firing it for us. If you look close you can see a 6 stamped in the bottom, the 4 doesn't show in picture it was made in 46.
This next item was one that belonged to my DH oldest Aunt on his Daddy's side. There were 5 girls and 4 boys, Aunt Velma was the Matriarch of the Family, she had no children and her DH had died in the early 50's when he fell out of a tree, coon hunting and broke his neck, when she pasted all the Families got together and took what they wanted and then let the kids pick an item each of her's to keep. Since DH and I were the youngest there wasn't much left to choice from. So I got this cute little ash tray. The arm was with it at the time, it had been broke and she'd glued it back but over the years, she died in '74, the arm fell off and disappeared, but DH won't let me get rid of it....

When you put your cigarette in the shoe holder the smoke came out of the mouth. Really novel.
Next is a picture DH got out of his older brother's trailer when he pasted away from Brain and lung cancer in 2002. It is a reproduction of a The Saturday Evening Post cover, that he said he remembered being in his Mom's kitchen when he was growning up and he won't get rid of it, so it hangs in our bedroom over his guitar area.

The next items DH got from the old place before they bull dozed it down with everything still in it. DH had 2 old Maid Aunts and 2 Bachelor Uncles that lived in the old home place after the parents died, Granny Smith didn't know any better back in the 40's she willed the home and 200 areas of land to Marvin the oldest Uncle cause she just knew he'd take care of the other 3, they all worked the farm and paid the bills, will you know how that goes. Late in life Marvin married a merry widow, gold digger. She had lost her first hubby in a boating accident he feel out while they her fishing and drowned, she had two little boys, she was 25 yrs younger than Marvin....He built her a newhouse but she refused to let him deed the home place or any of the land to the Sisters. Carlos the Brother that lived with the Aunts passed away in 1980. Marvin passed in 1986. Yep you guessed it, she put the aunts out of the home place and sold it and all the land. They had 2 weeks to get out and find a place to live. Since DH's Daddy passed in 79 and the other Brother died in 84, there was no one to help them. Unfortunately the, law was on the Merry Widow's side. She was the surviving spouse. They weren't even given anytime to get all their things out before the bulldozers showed up. After the job was done DH went and dug through it and found these 2 items... I say a woman like that has a place in hell just for her. She's still a live, 89 yrs old and remarried 2 years ago after losing 2 other hubbies since Marvin...

This is an old brown whiskey jug that was in The old house for as long as I knew them since about '61, and DH said it had been there since he was a little boy. The other is an old kerosene stove jar. You filled it with Kerosene and screwed in into a holder and cooked kinda like the gas bottle you use on camp stoves now, except this stove looked like a wood burner. We were so lucky the bulldozer didn't destroy them. I have them setting on the wood burning heater in my den.
Like I said, most people ask me why I don't get rid of this junk, and too must people it is just junk, but to me it is memories, of loved ones that can never be replaced by new things.
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY VINTAGE THINGIES! SEE YOU NEXT WEEK! FOR MORE WONDERFUL VINTAGE THINGIES VISIT COLORADO LADY

  3. Molly, I love the stories. I had a Aunt Velma. The Merry Widow and the aunts being put out of their home is shameful but that stuff did go on, didn't it? Thanks for sharing.

  6. Shame shame on that bad woman who put the poor old aunts out. Her day of reckoning will come!

That kerosene jug is fascinating! Amazing that it and the jug survived the bulldozing.

The ashtray reminds me of the German "smokers" they make over there..."Rauchermann" -- unique!

  11. Well, Molly, looks like you were showing great talent at the young age of 3! Your Mom was a wise woman to save that early, primative piece for you! I have several "vintage" pieces of artwork my own children have made for me. Just the last weekend, my girls were making fun of a silly looking mermaid sculpture my youngest made.
That ashtray is so novel it would almost make me take up smoking! LOL I wonder if one of those little incense cones would make it work the same as ciggie smoke?
BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! Most of the "things" decorating my blog now were only added recently. I am SO enjoying visiting other blogs and am looking forward to checking yours out this morn! You have a lovely day now and you can bet I'll be dropping by often. I'm loving all your images. Wondering if they are your paintings. I must go see!

I think your very lucky to have your "junk"...I can not think of a single item I own that belonged to another family member (except a few things of my mom's but they'r not really old OR connected with any great story!)...that makes me wonder what happened to all the stuff owned by family member's that have passed...

  23. Sweet Molly.........

I am so grateful for your prayers for my girl. I love her so much. Isn't it fabulous that you can "meet" someone on the internet and they care enough to pray for your child? I am humbled and so pleased.

    Thank you sooooo much!

    God bless you,
    Spencer
