Friday morning I had to run to town and on the way back I had to stop and wait for the red light so I could turn left onto 51 hwy. and head home, I looked up and saw this building and my mind said, "hey, Molly, and I said "what, can't you see I'm watching traffic and NO, we are not getting a biscuit?"...and my mind said "I'm crushed, of course I know you can't get a biscuit ....but...wouldn't it be nice, so fluffy and buttery, hummmmm, oh, ok...I'm sorry. But what a great story this would make for the blog", and I said "self, you do think every now and then don't you?" Little did I know when I grabbed my camera I was going to get only 3 pictures but 3 different stories, all containing blue and all taken within 4 minutes of each other...boy it's great to have a camera on hand, if you just have enough time to get good pictures...
The first picture is of a small little drive thru or take out for breakfast and lunch place, now to look at this place most travelers passing through wouldn't stop, I know I wouldn't, but us locals, well now we fight to be the first one there in the mornings, It is Simply called Dude's, named after the guy who started it 47 yrs ago. Jasper Dude. His biscuits are a local legend, melt in your mouth goodness, Jasper was a very wise businessman (I know his building doesn't look like much, but He started his Business right down the road from the 2 local factories in Wesson, the building there was a lot nicer than this one, The plant workers ate breakfast with him. It was simple, he arrives at 3:00 am and starts cooking, since most of us had little time to sit down and eat, we just drive though and place our order much like at Micky-D's but his is home made from scratch. In the Wesson place he served just breakfast, but in 1977 GM build their Delphi plant in Brookhaven and a lot of the Wesson workers quit and started working at the plant in Brookhaven (better pay and working conditions), He stayed in Wesson for awhile and did ok, but after a couple of years he made a very wise move. He found a small building (used to be an old tire dump) right on the corner of 51 Highway and Industrial park road, everyone who worked in the park had to pass his place to get to work.... again he just started with breakfast, later expanded his hours to include lunch making the best burgers and fried chicken, in town, Now you better get there early cause once they are gone, there are no more made that day, and he closes at 2:00 pm on the dot.
Mr. Jasper died 10 yrs ago, but his Son took over and has never changed a thing. He says if it ain't broke why fix it. There have been so many little business that where doing great till someone tried to fix what wasn't broke and it just died. I had to wait for some cars to move to get this shot and by then the light had changed and the next picture can into view....but more on that next week...
Front of Dude's with his blue post, blue paper box and blue Pepsi Machine...and the best buscuits in town.
Hope y'all have a great blue Monday, it is extremely blue skied here today and the sun is shining bright.
Oh Molly, you've got my mouth watering. Happy Blue Monday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday Molly. Those bisqits sound wonderful. Have a great day
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'm hungry. I love homemade biscuits. Little places like that are such a find, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteThose hole in the walls are usually the best place to eat!
ReplyDeleteSo is this place in Brookhaven now? I may have to venture down there sometime.Love homemade biscuits.
ReplyDeleteI suddenly felt some cravings for the biscuit hehehe.
ReplyDeleteBuilding Memories Together for Blue Monday.
I would love to go there! Thank you for sharing! Happy Blue Monday :)
ReplyDeleteOHHHH, Molly!
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing like a little nondescript known-only-to-townsfolk hole in the wall to have the BEST food in the county. And we want to KEEP it secret, I think, like our own old Family Recipe for Pecan Pie or a crank-churn of ice cream.
Can't wait for your other Blues!
I am not sure where you are in relation to where my sister lives. I wish it was close as I would certainly love having some of those biscuit. My sister lives in Hernando, Ms.
ReplyDeleteBiscuits sound great to me right about now. Happy Blue Monday!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing Dude's with us, Molly. We will definitely check it out the next time we're down that way.
ReplyDeleteLooks like his overhead is way low, so he can concentrate on making good biscuits. Man, slap on some jelly and eat 'em up. Sounds great.
ReplyDeleteSuper story girl~
Susie, it is in Brookhaven on Hwy 51 and Industrial Blvd. Coming off I-55 you would take the north exit and follow the signs to Industrial Blvd and it will take you straight to it.
ReplyDeleteCorgidogmama, he has 2 cooks and 4 counter girls, I loved his Trail Biscuits, made with eggs, ham, bacon or sausage, cheese and extra large size biscuit.
They are fine.
LV, if your sister lives in Hernando, she lives a good ways from us, we are in Central MS. an hrs drive south of the capital Jackson.
