Historic Photos of Mississippi

I know that any of you who follow my blog, knows how much I love the history and stories of the great State of Mississippi, My Grandparents on both sides called Mississippi home, before it was called a State.
I have several Coffee table book on the history of Mississippi, 1 about the great Piney Woods area, the History of the Railroad in MS and also one on the Founding of Brookhaven formally known as Ole Brook.
But I'm here to tell y'all about a book I found this weekend, called the Historic Photos of Mississippi by Anne B. McKee
Mrs. McKee is a literary artist and she has spent hours and hours researching the different Historical Archives in the State, taken pictures from old archives that have never been seen before and researched the history and story behind each and everyone, she turned them into a story that you can get lost in, most books tell a story of our history adding a few picture, but you are left to try and visualize the history, Mrs. McKay being a true artist in her field, has filled this book with pictures of history and real folks and told the story to go with them, you see what t
he people saw, you feel what they felt, you feel the pain of the Civil War. During the Siege of Vicksburg, you are right there. During the Great Flood of 1927 you are there.....
You float back to the days of the Civil War and travel forward in time to the 1970's .
Passing through ....
The Civil War and Survival...1860-1899
The Joy of the golden age...1900-1919
Depression years and Singing the Blues...1920-1939
War in Europe and Struggle at Home.....1940-1970
She tells the real story of Mississippi and it's people , not the story so many people believe to be true.
Did you know that on July 8th 1889 sports history was made in the small sawmill town of Richburg, this was the site selected for the last professional bare-knuckle championship boxing match between John L Sullivan and Jake Kilrain?....neither did I. But in this book I got to see these two boxers in the ring and learned all about the fight....
or that during the Civil War a covered bridge over the Pearl River in Jackson was used to corral prisoners of War.
You feel like you are there during the Terrible flood of the great Mississippi in 1927, through these pictures you are stranded on the roofs and standing in the food lines waiting for relief. Your there for the drought of 1930.....
It takes us through the dark days of the Civil war, the depression and the civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's
Mississippi is the home of some of the literary greats, like William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty, the Delta is the home of the Blues with greats like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and MS is home to great singers like Conway Twitty, Jimmy Rogers, I could go on and on about this book, but I will say, if you live in MS or know some one who did, this is a book they will love and you will too, it is one I will display on my coffee table for years and I plan on buying 3 more, 1 each for my boys.
If you love history, even if you don't live in MS it is a must have read. there is a lot in here that you will love.....it is the true south at it's best.
You can check this book out at Amazon or at barnesandnoble
I can't recommend this book enough. So go and buy you one, grab a large glass of ice tea, curl up in the swing and float away to another time and place....

A trip to Trustmark park....to meet a sweet blogger buddy

Last Thursday I went to Jackson to met a sweet blogger friend, Montee from Montee Is A Palmettogirl http://monteewellman.blogspot.com/ If you've never visited her blog, check her out you won't regret it.....Montee lives in Texas, but since her hubby is GM for the Mississippi Braves she spends the summer in the "Sip"...we had talked about having lunch one day and getting to met each other, Also this year the MB was host to the Atlanta Braves tryout camp, my GS Keifer had planned to attend, so we decided to met the day of tryouts and eat lunch in the Grill over the Field where we could watch some of the tryouts, but unfortunately Keif was in a group that was on the side that the grill was on and we couldn't see him and I didn't really want him to know I was there, afraid it would make him nervous.

But I did get to met the sweetest lady, and Rissa was with me and she took to Montee like a duck to water, which is unusual, she is usually real reserved around someone she doesn't know.

She even wanted her picture made with Montee,

We sit and talked like we had known each other all our lives, We had chicken salad sandwiches which I thought was fairly good but Montee worried because they weren't as good as usual...I don't eat the crust of the sandwich anyhow, so I found it to be ok...but she kept apologizing for recommending them....she is so sweet......we also had an older couple that Montee knew from the park arrive at the same time we did for lunch and we asked them to join us. I really enjoyed meeting Montee, she is a true southern girl after my own heart, as the saying goes she's a little bit country and a whole lot of personality. MY KIND OF PERSON.......We finally decided to walk out side to see if we could see Keif any where...all the try outers had moved to the dugout....

I finally spotted him and he came up to where we where. He unfortunately didn't make it but he wasn't too disappointed, he said he knew he didn't have much of a change, he is an outfielder and a great hitter and base runner, but they were looking for pitchers and catchers and really didn't pay much attention to the outfielders who showed up. I did get to introduce him to Montee and then he was off to work...I was so proud of him, he had gone to work at 7:00 until 9:30 leaving just enough time to make it to the park by 10, then after tryouts he went and ate lunch and went back to work...he works in the summer for Gulf South pine line, and boy is it hot out there, the other 2 guys from Richland that was there used the TOs as an excuse to take the whole day off.

Doesn't he look like he is saying, Granny put the camera down...sorry I can't help it just had to take one more with the bat bag on the shoulder; oh such sweet memories. I still hate that he won't play in College...he is in Nursing and says there is no way to taking Nursing and play baseball and that his career comes first......sigh...I really think he went to tryouts for his PawPaw and me. OK, I know we all love our Grands but this child is extra special to me, not only my first, but he lived with me for so long when his Dad worked on the road and was gone for month's at a time. And even though sometimes I know he might get aggravated with his Granny he still loves me and doesn't mind showing it...

After he left Montee and I also parted ways and are planning on meeting again one day this summer and going on a shopping trip. I can't wait to take her to some of my favorite junkin spots.

A Journey home......

Sat I went with my DIL and GD to a blueberry farm in Puckett, MS. This is about a 40 minute drive from their home in Richand and about an hour and 45 min. drive from my home.......
When we left the farm we pasted through some beautiful country, the sun was bright and skies clear, even though it was hot, we had AC and the trip was very relaxing.... first we passed a large chicken farm....
On the side of the road in this beautiful area was this clean, freshly painted Baptist Church, there is just something about a small wooden Country Church that makes my heart just melt....
We passed a small park with a lake and just look at all of the Geese and there are a few ducks mixed in there...that where waiting to get some bread crumbs from the folks brave enough to bear the heat, it was so beautiful and relaxing even in the heat.
I tell you they were everywhere, what a beautiful drive we had...
Then we stopped in Brandon to visit a lady that Rissa's Mom works with to see the 3 new babies...Rissa just fell in love...
They are less than a month old and are just so adorable...
Rissa and her Mom are very much a like in alot of ways and both just love cats,
The little one on the left was trying to nurse on Rissa's leg...lol..Rissa said that it tickled...
They are so cute...but we have to keep moving got a lot to do and along way to go. We made it to Richland and I dropped them off I headed back north to Madison...a 25 minute drive to take BB and His Lady their blueberries and visit my Granddogs before heading to Brookhaven....
Heading north, the tower in the distance on the left is a cellphone tower in Ridgeland, just out side of Madison....Madison is a very up class city, the Mayor of the city passed a law that there could be no power lines, cellphone towers or large signs in sight in her town.......Even Wal-Mart had to build to a certain standard to be allowed to build there, even the service stations have to have a special look. It is hard to find stores or business because they have to use small unobtrusive signs.
This is the entrance of BB subdivision, I tried to get pictures of some of the building and stores in Madison, but the traffic was moving to fast....
Ahhh, there his house is, just up the street almost there....I love that big Bradford Pear in the corner of his yard with the bench sitting under it....
Here I am at the front door, left camera in car..I had my hands full with Blueberries and cantaloupes. Stayed a little while, but I have been gone since Thurs and this is Sat and I'm ready to go home, I've got an hr and 45 min. drive........
So I kissed BB and headed south...see there is the tower again up ahead...
I'm going through down town Jackson, the streets are quite today because they are having Jubilee Jam and everyone is in the misting tents trying to cool off, it is now 2:30 Pm and 98 degrees....
On my left is the famous Hal and Mal's, this is were they hold the party after the St. Patty's Day Parade, the Sweet Potato Queen rules over her subjects here...
I'm not sure what this building is, but I have been watching them renovating it for awhile and really like what they have done to it....
Right up the road I hit a detour on I-55 south, as usual they are working on the roads...I don't think they ever finish, so I had to put my camera up and drive...I'm headed home and ready to be there.....but I did make on stop on I-55 south at Elton Rd Flea Market...will show you my great fines in another post. But now, I'm going to do what I did Sat when I got home...I'm going to bed....
Hope you enjoyed your little ride along with me...

P.S., I think I love you....

I know I love you...hummmmm a follow up to Blue Monday/Blueberry Sat. We also picked blackberries and oh my, were they big, juicy and sweet....so I made DH this pie for his Supper tonight. Decided I'd better snap a picture before he finds it or there won't be anything left to snap...lol....I know it's not the prettiest crust, it kept tearing on me so I just said what the heck, I'm not baking it for a pie contest...no, no I'm not, the crust is just to hold the marvelous filling in place....so as it tore I patched and I must say it was hummmm so Delicious. Not much left now, DH found it and said he didn't care what the crust looked like all that mattered is how it taste....
and that was a thumbs up....
