Hot Dog..
picture from internet
I love a good hot dog, I think most Americans do, but when I was doing research, I was so surprised to learn the History of the "American" hot dog, goes back centuries before America was even discovered...you can read the fascinating history here.....
Also called frankfurters, frank, weenie, wienie, wiener, dog, and red hot. A cooked sausage that consists of a combination of beef and pork or all beef, which is cured, smoked, and cooked. Seasonings may include coriander, garlic, ground mustard, nutmeg, salt, sugar, and white pepper. They are fully cooked but are usually served hot. Sizes range from big dinner frankfurters to tiny cocktail size.
Hot dogs are among America's favorite foods. Every year, Americans consume on average 60 hot dogs! Hot dogs are primarily regarded as a fun, summertime food, and most are eaten between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The October 5, 1895 edition of the Yale Record included a poem about "The Kennel Club," a popular campus lunch wagon which sold sausages in buns:

ECHOES FROM THE LUNCH WAGON
"'Tis dogs' delight to bark and bite,"
Thus does the adage run.
But I delight to bite the dog
When placed inside a bun.

  2. Okay - I live in Atlanta now, but I am a Chicago Hotdog die hard fan.

It is vienna beef and buns with poppy seeds, mustard, no ketchup, relish, onions, tomato, pickles, and celery salt. Oh yeah two sports peppers.

    YUM!

  3. Those things are probably about as healthy as a pork rind, but it's downright un-American to not like 'em!

  4. Happy Monday Molly!
Oh yeah- we use to call them wieners-and I ate them 'raw' as a kid. YUCK!
'The wiener the world awaited'; remember that slogan.

  6. Love that Lunch Wagon poem. I'm such a wierdo. Didn't eat meat from age 14 to 40something, but now I don't eat any meat EXCEPT hot dogs...any kind made from elk are my fave! Yup. Probably the worst meat concoction in existance and that's the one meat I eat!! (I do chicken breasts too,but that's a bird of a different feather!) Good H word!
