Sara's Pear Relish.

Last week I told y'all I was going to make pear relish, well DH decided he wanted pear halves instead. Didn't hurt my feelings at all..lol..so much easier to do. But I was also asked about the recipe so here is the recipe my Momma gave me years ago.
This is great with everything, including hot biscuits.

Ingredients:

  • 12 pounds firm pears, about 40, peeled, cored, quartered
  • 2 green bell peppers, seeded and quartered
  • 2 red bell peppers, seeded and quartered
  • 2 pounds onions, about 7 to 8 medium, peeled and quartered
  • 5 cups white vinegar
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons whole mixed pickling spice (mix in with pears)
  • 2 tablespoons turmeric
  • optional...if you like it hot or with a little kick to it, add a couple of hot peppers.

Preparation:

Grind pears, onions, and bell peppers. Drain off all liquid. I use a food processor..
Combine vinegar, sugar, salt, pickling spices, and turmeric in a large kettle. Boil 10 minutes. Add ground fruit and vegetables; bring to a boil. Boil 15 minutes. Spoon into hot sterilized jars and seal quickly.
Process for 15 -20 minutes in a boiling-water canner,
Makes about six pints.
Serve with roasted or grilled meats.

  3. Those are exactly the flavors I remember from Grandmother's Pear Relish. Do you tie the pickling spices in a bag, or just let them float in the mixture?

  4. Sounds delicious. I'll be it tastes a lot like the chow chow that my grandmother used to make.

  5. Hey Molly, We have a Canton address but think of ourselves as living in Madison. We are about 6 miles from the city.

Have a great day. I'm off to work.

  6. Interesting ingredients - I would rather read them than taste them, however, but thanks for reporting on how to make it! I'm not one for hot spicy or peppers. It does sound interesting, so if someone offered me a teeny tiny taste, I might try it with 2 teeth!
