Vintage Thingie Thursday

I am slowly getting back to posting, life is settling down a little around here, or rather, I am taking my life back a little at a time...lol..I haven't posted much on VTT lately because....well, I had just run out of ideas...but this last few weeks while cleaning out and straightening up, I decided to clean out my buffet in my Den. It in itself is a vintage treasure from my MIL...

And tucked away inside was my most valued treasure of all times. My Momma's silverware set, when we were little, Momma struggled to just feed and cloth us, but she always love pretty things, nice things. She found a silverware pattern she just loved called Precious and started saving and buying 1 piece at a time. Some times it would be a year before she could get just one piece. She called it her "ME treasure", something for herself that kept her going, gave her hope that life could and would be better. When Jim, my Brother got old enough to work he started buying her pieces until she had her whole set including the chest. He also, when he went to work full time, bought her a beautiful set of china. Which I will show you one day, I got the silverware and Sis got the china.
Over the years of traveling and moving with my Step-Dad the chest became tattered and worn so in the 70s after Mom passed and I received it, I redid the chest to match the period...oh good lord what did I ever see in the pattern to think it would work on a silver chest..lol..this was during MY Colonial period....
the inside is tattered and the knife holders are gone, I plan to redo it one day but for right now I leave it as is....if you look close in the right hand corner you will see a baby spoon that was mine a gift to Momma from her big Brother uncle Reggie before I was born.....and I used it with all 3 of my boys.
another view showing the knives also...

Well that's my trip down memory lane for this week, so happy to have y'all travel back with me
hope everyone has a blessed week.
HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY VINTAGE THINGIES! SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!

The Simple Woman's Day Book

FOR TODAY
Outside my window...it is overcast and foretells the approach of Hurricane Ida, very unusual to have a Hurricane in Nov…thankfully it is turning into a Tropical Storm and will come in to land East of us. Good for us bad for the folks in Al.….

I am thinking ..what this late storm might be predicting for our winter weather, the last 2 yrs have been very strange and unusual, weather wise for everyone, not just the south.

I am thankful …..for all the wonderful gifts God has given us. For the continued improvement of Ronnie he actually got to come down and hold his 1st Grandson Friday he and I spent a couple of hrs with Baby and Mother.. Thankful for the new roof we had put on last week and that the insurance company paid it all with out a problem.

From the kitchen...for breakfast it’s hot coffee, Cream cheese buns for Charles for me oatmeal and bananas.
Supper baked ham and tator salad with baked beans and home made bread.

I am wearing…green flannel night gown…soft pink aloe socks…will have to get dressed soon and head to Wally world, but for now enjoying lounging around.

I am going…to be very busy this week, Senior Day for the Country being held at our Church this week, We’ll be serving soup and cornbread, I volunteered to make a big pot of Homemade veggie soup. The reason for baked ham for supper tonight, will use the ham bone for the soup.

I am creating...3 glass block night lights for my DILs Mothers, Christmas presents.”

I am reading...Beth Moore’s study of Daniel. We are studying the prophets this week and for the next 5 weeks. Scary but exciting at the same time..

I am hearing...total silence in the house except for Chi-Chi snoring and cars going by trying to make their 8 o’clock classes, they are late as usual.

Around the house...need to do the everyday cleaning, hope to finish with winterizing the flowers and bushes when the weather clears up again.

One of my favorite things...the smile on a child’s face when he sees something new and exciting….

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Monday…clean house good. Go to town and talk to insurance salesman finish paper work for new health insurance…bake ham and then put on large pot of veggie soup for Senior meeting tomorrow. Will let it simmer low all night..

Tuesday…go to Senior Day
Weds….try to paint a little, then Church for Bible Study
Thurs…will play by ear.

Fri. …take some soup to my Niece who had surgery, she’s doing great, but will be another month before she can really move shoulders and neck too much.

Sat…paint and hopefully go out for supper, haven’t been out in awhile.

Sunday Church and then if it‘s pretty DH and I plan to do a little back roads driving in search of old long forgotten cemeteries. I love to read the old head stones and take pictures.…..didn’t get to go last week DH was sick.
Here is picture thought I am sharing...
Grump getting to hold Grandson for the first time..lol..I told him Jax was covering his face to keep from looking at him....The last 2 surgeries have been hard on Ronnie, he has gained well over 25 lbs from meds and not being able to do anything but sit.
Hope when he heals he will find some relief for his back without taking meds that blow him up.

Sunday Favorite rerun....Homemade yeast bread...

It's time again for Sunday Favorite Re-runs, a new Meme hosted by Chari over @ happytodesign http://happytodesign.blogspot.com/ It is so much fun to go back and re-run some of my favorite post.
This week I'm reposting one I did the 2d week I posted a blog..I thought that with the Holidays coming up, someone might find this useful...
First I want to thank my SIL Dot Smith for this recipe and tell you this woman can make the best bread you've ever put in your mouth....

I have long wanted to learn how to make sourdough bread, since my Hubby and I both love it. So my SIL who has made it for years finally gave me a start in Nov. I was in heaven, and my kitchen also smelled like heaven when these 3 loaves where baking. We enjoyed fresh bread for Christmas and for New Years and alas, I wasn't able to make it this last go around and had forgot to ask my SIL what to do if I couldn't make it after I feed it, and I soon found out what happens when it's left unattended...it sours, boy did it stink...so I had to throw my starter out....just broke my heart.
So I went searching and found her starter recipe on the internet....oh, joy.... I thought some of you might be interested in making some fresh bread. If you don't have a recipe here is a good one... I made my starter today and can't wait for it to mature in 5 days. I am going to try to fill on loaf full of cheese and hot peppers, for my Dear Hubby, I hope it turns out. I will let y'all know..lol..

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
3 tablespoons instant mashed potato flakes
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

DIRECTIONS
Combine instant potatoes, sugar, water, and yeast in a covered container. Let the starter sit on a counter for 5 days, stirring daily with a wooden spoon.
On the morning of the fifth day, feed the starter with 3 tablespoons instant potatoes, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 1 cup warm water. In the evening, take out 1 cup of the starter to use in a sourdough recipe. Refrigerate the remaining starter.
Every five days, feed the starter 3 tablespoons instant potatoes, 3 tablespoons sugar and 1 cup water. If starter is to be used in a recipe, let the fed starter rest at room temperature 6 hours before use. If starter is not being used in a recipe, keep refrigerated and discard 1 cup of starter after each feeding.
This is what it looks like mixed up.
I always have a hard time remembering when to feed it so, I printed off a calender of the month and wrote down the day I made the starter and counted 5 days and wrote feed and make bread, then start counting for 5 more days.
My recipe for the sourdough bread
INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
1 cup sourdough starter
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup corn oil
6 cups bread flour

DIRECTIONS
Mix sugar, corn oil, salt, water, and 1 cup of sourdough starter together in a large bowl. Sift the flour and add to the mixture. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, turn to grease on all sides, cover loosely with towel let rise 8-12 hrs in a warm place.
After 8-12 hrs punch down and fold dough to the center into a ball, Knead 3 or 4 times, stretch out and divide into 3 parts. Knead each part on a floured surface for 8-10 strokes. Put in greased loaf pans. Brush each with oil. Let rise for 8-10 hrs, bake in preheat oven of 350 degrees for 30 to 35 mins. Immediately remove from pan and brush tops with melted butter. Cool on racks and store in plastic bags when cool in refrigerator. To Freeze wrap in plastic, then in foil and freeze....mine never lasted long enough to make it to the freezer....
I hope you enjoy....
